The short answer? Both Merino Wool and Synthetic fibres are brilliant

Our socks are so comfortable for a reason. Our Merino wool socks have the perfect blend. We combine Merino wool fibres with synthetic fibres. So you get all the benefits.

One of the most debated questions in trail running is whether you reach for merino wool or synthetic socks. We love both, both offer genuine advantages, and both belong in a well-kitted runner's drawer.

At Bridgedale, we have spent decades designing both types of socks. They withstand tough conditions. They work in muddy British fields and during sudden heatwaves. Here's our honest breakdown.

From the sock experts (us)

With Over 100 years of experience with Socks, we know what we’re talking about.

Our Bridgedale high performance socks — use blends. The best Merino wool socks use a blend of Merino wool and synthetic fibres. A higher Merino wool percentage does not always mean better performance.

Merino wool is a natural fibre from Merino sheep. Each fibre feels soft on skin.

With it's fine texture, it can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture before it feels wet. It also contains lanolin, which naturally resists odour-causing bacteria, something your nose truly appreciates.

Synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester, and Coolmax do not absorb moisture. Instead,
they wick it away from the skin to the sock’s outer surface. They dry fast and are typically more durable than wool alone.

When to choose Merino Wool: odour resistant running socks

Merino Wool: the flexible sock for all year round.

Merino wool suits unpredictable British weather that can bring sun and sleet in the same hour. Merino is your ally. Its ability to regulate temperature across a wide range makes it remarkably versatile sock.

Choose merino when you're:

  • Running in cool or variable conditions (autumn, winter, high altitude)
  • Going long — best socks for ultra marathons, all-day, or multi-day fast packing
  • Prone to hot spots or looking for a running sock for blister prevention
  • Running a route where you'll be on feet far longer than usual
  • Packing light and need a sock that stays fresh across multiple days

When to choose synthetic running socks

Synthetic: the sock for warm weather training

For runners racing in summer heat or doing back-to-back training days where gear has to dry overnight — our Coolmax socks are perfect. They're consistent, fast-drying, and engineered to be superior at moisture wicking.

Choose synthetic when you're:

  • Racing or doing tempo efforts
  • Training in hot, dry conditions — summer trails, that Mediterranean feeling
  • Running back-to-back days and need overnight (and fast) dry-out time
  • Competing in an event with water crossings (fast dry matters here)

  • Overall well being

A small daily habit — but one that can make a surprisingly significant impact on the trail.
