Outdoor Activities for Mental Health: Hiking, Walking, and Nature’s Healing Power

Rediscovering the Outdoors: Why Every Step Counts

Why Nature is One of the Most Effective Tools for Mental Wellbeing

September brings with it World Suicide Awareness Month and we are focusing on all mental health awareness. At Bridgedale, we believe it’s important to highlight how looking after both our bodies and minds can be supported by something as simple—and powerful—as spending time outdoors.

Mental health affects us all, and sometimes the smallest steps—literally—can make the biggest difference. One of the most effective and accessible ways to support well-being is by immersing yourself in nature. Whether it’s a short daily walk, a bike ride, or a hike through woodland trails, the outdoors has been proven to calm the nervous system, regulate mood, and release endorphins for balance and resilience.

The Mental Health Benefits of the Outdoors

Nature has a remarkable ability to calm, restore, and regulate. Studies show that
individuals who spend two to three hours a week in nature are around 20% more likely to report high life satisfaction compared to those who don’t. And the benefits don’t require long days outside—even short bursts of 20 minutes in nature can reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone that impacts mood and energy.

In the UK, we’re fortunate to have a variety of outdoor spaces at our doorstep—from woodland paths and mountain trails to parks and ponds—making it easier than ever to
integrate outdoor activity into daily life.

Beyond Stress Relief: Community and Connection

The benefits of green spaces go far beyond stress relief. Time outdoors has been shown to improve mood, reduce anxiety, sharpen focus, and boost concentration. Importantly,
being outdoors also helps strengthen relationships and build community. Shared activities—like a family walk, joining a community hiking group, or gardening together—create connections that combat loneliness and build resilience.

Starting small in your local area can have a big impact. Even a short daily walk is enough to reconnect body, mind, and nature.

Walking and Mental Health: Every Step Counts

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective outdoor activities for mental well-being. Research shows that people who take more than 7,000 steps a day have a 31% lower risk of depression compared to those who walk less. Each additional 1,000 steps up to 10,000 reduces that risk even further.

The beauty of walking is its simplicity: it’s free, accessible, and doesn’t require special equipment. Whether it’s a gentle stroll through your neighbourhood or a challenging hike in the hills, every step counts toward a healthier body and mind.

Bridgedale Socks: Small Things, Big Moments

At Bridgedale, we know that comfort is key when spending time outdoors. That’s why our socks are engineered to support every adventure—big or small. We believe that when you look after the little things, like your feet, you create the space to focus on the bigger picture: your well-being, your experiences, and the joy of being present in nature.

This Suicide Awareness Month, we encourage you to take time for yourself outdoors. Whether it’s a short walk, a weekend hike, or a cycle around the local park, remember that small steps can make big moments.
